How to Choose Your Keywords

Selecting the right keywords to represent your company on search engines is very important to increase your search engine rankings and to increase your company’s website traffic. You may be wondering how to go about the keyword selection process, so we have put together a few tips to help you get started.

First, you want to identify the search terms people are most often using that are associated with your business or industry. These search terms can be single word terms, short tail keywords, or longer two to four word phrases, long tail keywords. It is important to include a combination of these when you choose your keywords.

Next, go through your company’s website to find words or phrases that are used frequently to describe what your company does. By basing your keywords on your website content, you will be linking those keywords being searched for back to your website which will optimize your search engine results and rankings. You may need to adjust your company’s website after selecting keywords to include these keywords in titles and throughout your information rich website.

Another important tip is to use SEO tools to help with your company’s keyword selection. There are many online tools that will help you with this process. Some of these tools include: Keyword Discovery, Wordtracker, Google AdWords, Google Correlate, and Overture Keyword Selector.

Fourth, pay attention to word variants and word order once you have picked your keywords. Be sure to word or phrase your keywords in several different ways so as to attract the largest amount of traffic possible. For example, if your company buys artwork and the keyword you picked was “sell my artwork”, you would also want to think about including “artwork for sale” and “art to sell”. Just simply rewording your phrase of keywords can have a significant impact on the traffic you end up seeing on your site.
