Ripe For The Picking – October 1

It’s that time of the week again. What’s hot online this week? What up and coming trends should you jump on right now? What will this week’s winning lottery numbers be? (Alright, not that one.)

Grumpy cat

A couple weeks ago, the internet was introduced to Grumpy Cat. Reddit user Cataliades uploaded a picture of his sister’s cat, Tardar Sauce, who looks like…well, a grumpy cat.

Naturally, it didn’t take long before the memes started pouring in. Turns out Grumpy Cat doesn’t care for most things.

The thing that could make this one kind of tough to work with is that most of the memes are just jokes about cats. However, there’s definitely room to expand on that. Obviously, most of this little guy’s popularity stems from the fact that he’s freakin’ adorable, so that’s gives him a pretty mass appeal.

The best way to make Grumpy Cat work is to reference something frustrating about your industry. For example, we at National Positions might say something like “What do you mean / there’s a new Panda update?”

But don’t use that, because it’s really not that good; it’s just what I came up with off the top of my head. It’s Monday, alright?

Pocket Whale

This is about as fresh as fresh gets.  Early this morning, Reddit user gonzoblair uploaded a fake screenshot of Reddit in the year 3012, detailing what kinds of things people will be talking about online a thousand years from now. It’s all very tounge-in-cheek, but If you spend a lot of time on Reddit (or the internet in general, really), you’ll definitely get a kick out of it.

One of the things you may notice is a repeated reference to something called a “pocket whale.” Apparently, gonzoblair feels that miniature whales will become a pet in the year 3000, and will be as popular on the internet as cats are now.

There have already been sightings of “Misbehavin’ Pocket Whale,” so there’s a possibility that a new meme has been created and can be jumped on at the ground level.

There’s only one problem. If you follow the above link, you’ll notice that all the memes are a little…out there. They’re all just future jokes that play off of the original image.

However, it’s quite possible that just the IDEA of a “pocket whale” will catch on more than the meme itself. Does someone in your office have a small whale doll? Post a picture of it, and call it your office’s own pocket whale.

Overly Manly Man

For anyone who watches Parks and Recreation, I can sum this one up pretty easily. You know Ron Swanson? Overly Manly Man is just Ron Swanson jokes on a picture of an old-timey boxer. Got it? Awesome. You guys get to leave class early today.

Alright, now everyone else, pay attention.

Overly Manly Man is pretty self-explanatory. What’s the manliest thing you can think of? Got something? Now make a meme out of it. You’re done.

It really is that simple. As always, just try to tie it back to your industry.
