Making Sure your Images Work with SEO

April 5, 2011

Content is an important part of your SEO campaign. Content mostly comes in the ways of text. It’s important to have good quality text on your site that includes your keywords but if you have too much text no one will spend any good amount of time on your site. It’s also important to include images in your website. There are even simple things you can do to help improve your SEO efforts with your images.

You want to make sure your images are relevant to your content and the keywords. If someone clicks on your page they want to quickly determine whether it is relevant to the search they just began. Pictures are the fastest way they will determine it so if your pictures have nothing to do with the content on your page, users will determine that the page is not relevant to them and move elsewhere. Placing images near the text that relates to it the most will also help associate the image with the descriptive text so visitors have a better understanding of what the image and web page are about.

The way you name your pictures can have a big impact on your SEO efforts. You might have worked with an SEO company that helped you come up with the keywords you are targeting. Keep this list handy when naming images. Use dashes instead of underscores since the search engine sees these as spaces.

Consider the size of the images. You need the image to be large enough to make a connection with the user but too large and it could look weird on the screen. Going along with this theme, it’s necessary to make sure the image size will load correctly. The highest quality isn’t usually needed when saving the images and it will increase the load time.

Make sure the anchor text uses keywords as well. Make sure it also describes the photo. If you make your site user-friendly by describing the photos you will also make sure people want to come back to your site.

As you can see keywords are an important part of your images. Make sure you get your keywords finalized with your SEO company before you make changes to your photos.
