How You Can Use Google Places to Market Your Business

February 9, 2012

If you’re a small business owner, you should be taking advantage of ways in which you can market your business for free. One of the biggest opportunities to put your business on the map, no pun intended, is with Google Places. Why should you use Google Places? Well, first off, it’s completely free. If that’s not enough for you, Google reports that over 80% of people use the internet use it for local information. 70% of those people use Google.

Setting up Google Places is simple enough to do. It does, however, take time to generate customers. Before you can start building up your clientele, you should create a page.

There are 3 easy steps you must take before you can start using Google Places:

  1. Submit your business information: contact information, photos, videos, business hours, etc.
  2. Verify your listing by phone, SMS, or postcard.
  3. Wait until your listing appears on Google—up to 2 weeks.

There are several other options you can include, depending on how much of your business’s information you want to share with customers.

Avoid Common Mistakes

Don’t think that by stuffing your listing with every relevant category that it will generate more traffic to your listing. Usually it’s best if you stick to one category.

It is also important that you list your business phone number. It should be local and you should make sure that it is in service. You should avoid posting it on your website as a picture or JPEG.

Make sure your business is cited correctly. You want to make sure that the address on Google Places matches the one on your business website or the citation will weaken.

Optimize Business Rankings

You want your business to be one of the top seven rankings on Google that are most sought after. You can do this by making sure that you have positive reviews, current photos, and videos. Don’t over-sell your business by saying things like “the best in town.” You should be exact and not wordy.

Give a 360-Degree Look

With Google Business Photos, you can give patrons a 360-degree interactive look inside your business to make the user feel like they’re there. It gives off the impression that you have nothing to hide, and being a respectable business, you shouldn’t.

Google Places is a great way to market your business. By investing in creating a free profile, you will be helping your business succeed.
