OVERVIEW – Reverse Engineer a Super Blog

Stop right there. Before you start creating your next blog post, make sure you’re not wasting your valuable time. What does that mean? Don’t write a post that no one is going to care about, read, or organically promote for you. How do you do it? Follow your checklist: Is the topic current and trending? Are the bones of your outline strong? Is the meat something that your readers are sure to devour and rave about to friends and coworkers (a.k.a. your new prospects)? If you follow the steps below, you’ll find that your next Super Blog is a dish best served… reverse engineered.

HOW-TO

STEP ONE:  Pick a topic. Instead of just diving in and whipping up a post – find out what’s already been done. Choose a live blog (similar to the one you’d like to create) to model yours after. Opt for one that has already proven itself – a blog that’s been shared over and over and over and over…

STEP TWO: Read the post, take notes, and figure out what you could do to take it from an 8 to a 12…in your own way, in your own words. New facts or stats? A more solid angle? The addition of interviews? A more digestible format? Create your detailed outline. This should go without saying, but we’ll say it anyway: do not copy the original. Make your own, better version. Plagiarism leaves a bad taste in everyone’s mouth, which isn’t a good outcome when you’re looking to win over the tastebuds of thousands of people.

STEP THREE: Start writing your Super Blog, publish it and promote it. Email your list, as well as contacts from other sites whom you hope will read and share your post. You can even directly (and very nicely) ask them to pass along your post if they find it helpful, entertaining, and worth a glance.
