Blogging Tips

October 8, 2010

There’s no question that blogging can play a pretty important role in managing your site.  Not only can it greatly enhance your site’s SEO value, it also provides an informative resource for your visitors.  However, if you blog regularly, you probably know that it can be challenging at times to come up with interesting, informative posts.

If you ever find yourself up against the creative wall, here are a few hints that can help you come up with new ideas.

Think about the Big Picture

If SEO is one of your goals when you’re creating a blog, then it makes sense to start with the most basic component: keywords.  Pick one of your main keywords, and try to envision what your visitor is thinking as he does a search for it.  For instance, if your keyword is “tutoring services”, a large portion of your traffic is probably coming from parents who want to help their kids improve their grades.  The article doesn’t necessarily have to be directly about your tutoring services; it can be about the general challenges kids face in school and how they can affect their grades – presenting an opportunity to subtly mention your tutoring services.  In this way, you’ve helped establish your site as a resource on the general subject of children’s education, provided an informative article for your visitors, and enhanced your site’s SEO, all in an organic, natural way.

Talk About Your Company

A lot of business blogs focus on the products they sell, the services they offer, special savings opportunities, etc.  A blog post is a great opportunity to talk about your company and its culture.  Did someone just get promoted?  Is a long time employee finally retiring?  Did you have a great teambuilding event?  These types of posts can make it really easy to drop in keywords naturally, and give your visitors a great way to feel connected to your company.

Forget the Rules

In the end, what really matters is providing useful content that attracts visitors.  Worry less about keyword density and focus more on being genuine.  After all, there’s no better traffic than repeat traffic, and relevant, interesting content is a great way to keep people coming back for more.
